The term “Assistive Technology” (AT) is at its core a very broad terminology. The Minnesota Department of Education Assistive Technology Manual Update defines assistive technology as both a “device” and a “service”. A device refers to a specific type of “product” used to enhance the functional capabilities of a student with disabilities. Services are the support necessary to access the need to encourage and promote the use of the device. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004) more specifically breaks down the terms “device” and “service”. This month we are going to explore and break down what Assistive Technology is.
